Clean Air Act Title V Operating Permit – The campus operates air emission sources in accordance with a federally enforceable operating permit issued by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA). The University is required to have this permit because it is a major source of criteria pollutants. The five-year permit regulates the quantity of air emissions the University is allowed to emit into the atmosphere. The permit contains numerous monitoring, record-keeping, and reporting requirements that must be performed in order to demonstrate compliance with air emission limits.
State Construction/Operating Permits – Before a new air emission source can be constructed on campus, the University must obtain a state construction permit from the Illinois EPA. Additionally, a state air operating permit must be obtained for non-major University emission sources not covered by the University’s Clean Air Act Title V permit. Willard Airport and Allerton Park are governed by state air operating permits that have an indefinite expiration date.
Open Burning Permits - The open burning of waste is generally prohibited at the University. There are, however, a few exceptions concerning firefighter training and ecological management. Consult Environmental Compliance before conducting any kind of open burning or applying for an Illinois EPA open burning permit.
